COMHAR History
In January 1975, COMHAR became a free-standing center with a community governing board after being affiliated with Episcopal Hospital funded by a small grant to expand to a full community organization. The new nonprofit corporation named COMHAR, Inc. was established following several years of meetings initiated by a concerned mother, Dorothy Anderson, along with fellow citizens and community leaders. The meetings occurred at Episcopal Hospital to develop mental health services for people in the neighborhoods of Kensington, Port Richmond, Fishtown, and Juniata Park and were comprised of community leaders, citizens, and family members who became the core of the community governing board.
Letter from CEO and Board President
We are excited to celebrate our 50th year! In behalf of COMHAR we appreciate all that has been entrusted to our organization serving the Philadelphia community since 1975. COMHAR is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to transforming lives by providing essential support and services to children, adults, and families facing mental health challenges, co-occurring substance use disorders, and intellectual and developmental disabilities. Every month, through a range of services such as outpatient treatment, residential care, job and skills training, and family support programs, we are privileged to serve approximately 5,200 individuals and families in our community.
As we enter our 50th anniversary in 2025, we’re filled with gratitude for everyone who has been part of our journey. This milestone gives us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our dedicated team, the individuals we serve, and the community members and partners who have contributed to COMHAR’s success. We are thrilled to announce a year-long celebration that includes a Spring Dance Party for our members, a Summer Staff Picnic, and a Fall Community Wellness Fair and Block Party.
We will also be recognizing our organization’s accomplishments throughout the next 50 weeks in the following 5 categories: Our History and Impact, the recovery journeys of our members, recognizing our staff, our program highlights, and acknowledging our community partners throughout our past 5 decades.
